The number of graduates entering the job market each year keeps increasing. At Cardiff University we have around 6000 individuals graduating each year. This means high competition for jobs – work experience is more important than ever, as these extracts from High Fliers Research - The Graduate Market in 2015 make clear:
“Graduates who have had no previous work experience at all are unlikely to be successful during the selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a job offer for their organisations’ graduate programmes.”
“Recruiters have confirmed that 31% of this year’s entry-level positions are expected to be filled by graduates who have already worked for their organisations, either through paid internships, industrial placements or vacation work”
Here at Cardiff University there are plenty of ways to get involved and gain valuable work experience. Depending on the degree course that you are studying you may have the option to undertake a professional training year. This gives you the opportunity to gain substantial work related experience in a field relevant to your degree specialism which is credit bearing and supports your academic studies.
If you don’t have the opportunity to carry out a placement year due to the subject you are studying or you’d prefer to gain your work experience in shorter periods of time/outside of the academic year there are many options that you can explore.
